The African Development Bank Group is providing a $260 million loan to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to help finance the Value Chain Development Support Project as part of its support to the Agricultural Transformation Program (PADCV-PTA).
The project will contribute to the country's food self-sufficiency by stimulating the production of the main stirrup-based food crops of rice, cassava, maize and soybeans. This will significantly reduce large-scale food imports, which amounted to $3 billion in 2023, or 19% of the national budget, and its vulnerability to external shocks, including climate change and armed conflict.
Thus, 295,000 hectares of maize, soybeans, cassava and rice will be planted, using improved seeds that are resilient to climate change.
